Coventry Cathedral - St Michael's
St Michael's Coventry's first Cathedral was built on the site of an abbey founded by Earl Leofric and Lady Godiva 950 years ago. The ruins of Medieval St Michael's church became Coventry's second Cathedral from 1918, but was destroyed by aerial bombardment in 1940. The Ruins remain and contains the charred cross and modern works of art. The new cathedral, consecrated in 1962, is noted for Hutton's great glass screen, Piper's baptistry window, Graham Sutherland's great tapestry and the statue of St Michael and the Devil by Epstein. The visitor centre includes the treasury providing an exciting way of discovering the story of Coventry and its Cathedral.
