FOSSILS
At midnight in the museum hall,
The fossils gathered for a ball,
There were no drums or saxophones,
But just the clatter of their bones,
Rolling, rattling carefree circus,
Of mammoth polkas and mazurkas,
Pterodactyls and brontosauruses
Sang ghostly prehistoric choruses,
Amid the mastodonic wassail I caught the eye of one small fossil,
“Cheer up sad world,” he said and winked,
“It’s kind of fun to be extinct.”
by Frederic Ogden Nash, 1902-1971
今天上課讀到的,相當逗趣的一首詩尤其末兩句
“Cheer up sad world,” he said and winked,
“It’s kind of fun to be extinct.”
相當幽默卻又引人深省。
Nash是美國近代詩人,
他的詩以幽默方式入筆卻又寓意深遠,值得細細品嘗。
By the way, 學到不少古生物單字:
Pterodactyls翼手龍
brontosauruses雷龍
brachiosaurus腕龍
tyrannosaurus暴龍
mammoth長毛象
mastodon乳齒象
